Dental Implants Q & A

Why do I need to replace missing teeth?

Missing teeth are more than just cosmetically unsightly – they can also cause harm to your overall oral health.

When you’re missing a tooth, the remaining teeth in your smile can fall out of alignment as they shift towards the empty space. This can throw your bite out of alignment, which can lead to excessive wear and tear on your remaining teeth and put you at a higher likelihood of developing a jaw condition, like TMJ disorder.

Your natural tooth roots also provide stimulation to your jawbone, which keeps the bone tissue healthy. When you’re missing a tooth, your jawbone lacks that stimulation, and the bone tissue actually begins to deteriorate, leaving the muscles in your face to sag and cave in, altering the shape of your face and your overall appearance.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are tiny titanium posts that a dentist implants into your jawbone, where they work as artificial tooth roots.

Your body doesn’t recognize titanium as a foreign substance, so the implant fuses with your jawbone as you heal from the surgery, providing a strong foundation for a restoration, like a crown, bridge, or dentures.

Popper Dental uses Nobel Biocare™ implants for its patients, the most trusted and reputable name in dental implants. Standard implants are available at Popper Dental, as well as All-on-4 implants.

What is All-on-4?

All-on-4 is a revolutionary system that secures an entire arch of dentures with just four strategically placed dental implants. Two implants are placed in the interior of your mouth, while the other two are positioned at a 45-degree angle in your posterior, utilizing more of your available bone and eliminating the need for bone grafts.

All-on-4 dental implants offer a number of advantages over traditional dentures. Traditional dentures are typically held in place with suction or adhesive, which can leave them feeling loose and bulky in your mouth. With All-on-4 implants, your dentures connect to your jawbone through the dental implants, which makes them feel more comfortable and secure in your mouth. This also provides healthy stimulation to your jawbone, which helps prevent the bone loss typically associated with dentures.

What is the process of getting dental implants?

The team at Popper Dental installs your implants in a few office visits.

During your first visit, your dentist anesthetizes the area around your missing tooth, makes a surgical incision in your gum, drills a small hole in your jawbone, and places the implant inside. If your jawbone is not strong enough to support the implant, a bone graft takes place before the implant procedure.

Over the next few months, your implant fuses with your jawbone, after which you come back to Popper Dental to get your abutment. Your abutment is a tiny post that connects to your implant and sticks up out of your gum line to support your restoration.

Once you’ve healed from your abutment placement, it’s time to get your restoration, whether it’s a crown, bridge, or denture. You leave the office with a beautifully restored smile, ready to get back to your life.
