Emergency Dentist Q & A

What can an emergency dentist treat?

Emergency dentists primarily treat trauma-related tooth and mouth issues, such as:

  • Cracked or broken teeth
  • Knocked-out tooth
  • Damaged tooth nerve
  • Object stuck in the mouth
  • Oral bleeding
  • Facial or oral swelling (non-allergy related)

Emergency dentists can also address issues like severe tooth pain and severe tooth abscesses.

Can emergency dentistry save a knocked-out tooth?

If you store it properly, and you bring it to Popper Dental within an hour, you have a good chance at saving your knocked-out tooth.

To store your knocked-out tooth while you’re waiting to see the dentist, observe the following steps.

Rinse the tooth

First, rinse off any dirt. Make sure to handle it carefully. Avoiding damage to the roots, grasp it by the end of the tooth that faces out.

Put it in the socket

Sometimes, you can store a knocked-out tooth simply by placing it back in the socket. If you’re able to do this, after placing it, bite down on a wet tea bag or moistened gauze. It’s key to keep the tooth moist.

Put it in a container

If your tooth won’t stay in the socket, put the tooth in a container of milk or your own saliva. To stanch the bleeding coming out of the socket, apply a wet cold compress.

If you don’t have a container, you can hold it between your cheek and gums. If you choose the latter, take care not to swallow the tooth.
