Do you know much about your gums? If not, it’s time to learn. The more you know about your oral tissues, the better chance you have of keeping them in tip-top shape. Your gums are a vital part of your oral health and smile, and it’s very important to care for them regularly. Our dentist, Dr. Jason Popper, would like to teach you a thing or two about gums by sharing the following facts with you:

-Your gums are the pink, puffy soft tissue that surround the teeth. They create a seal around the teeth that protects the delicate nerves from harmful substances, like bacteria, infection and disease.

-It’s very important to clean your gums regularly. You can do so by brushing twice a day and flossing once a day. As you do these things, make sure to be gentle and thorough. You should never ignore bleeding gums.

-It’s possible to damage your gums. In fact, simple things like flossing and brushing too hard can harm the tissues and make them pull away from the teeth. This is why it’s important to be gentle as you brush and floss as well as use the proper oral hygiene tools.

-You should prevent gum disease as much as possible. This disease is caused by plaque buildup along the gumline. It can completely destroy the smile if you let it, which is why it’s very important to remove plaque and clean your smile regularly.
